The short answer
Not always. Clear PPF in good condition is usually worth keeping, because it has protected the paint a buyer will see. A colour wrap is a personal choice, so many owners take it off and sell the car in its original colour. Either way, check the film and the paint under it before you list the car.
When is it worth keeping the film on?
Clear PPF is close to invisible, so it does not change the car a buyer sees. If it is clean, with no lifting edges or yellowing, it shows that the front of the car has been kept safe from stone chips. A colour wrap or colour PPF in a neutral shade and in good condition can also stay, if the buyer likes the look.
When is it better to take it off?
- The colour is bold or personal, and most buyers will want the factory colour.
- The film is scratched, faded or lifting at the edges, which looks worse than bare paint.
- The buyer or dealer wants to see the original paint before agreeing a price.
What happens to the paint when the film comes off?
A good film on healthy factory paint comes off cleanly, and the paint underneath is in the condition it was protected in. Panels that were badly resprayed before the film went on can lift paint when the film is pulled off, so removal is a job for a wrap studio, not a quick peel at home. A polish afterwards brings the paint back to an even shine.
What will a buyer or dealer ask?
Expect questions on which film is on the car, when it was fitted, which panels it covers and what is underneath, so keep the invoice and photos from the job. If you are selling or trading in, ask our sister dealer Star Performance Motor, in the same unit in Yishun, whether to keep the film on or take it off before they make an offer.
Questions
Does a car wrap hurt resale value?
A wrap keeps the factory paint underneath, which helps when you sell. A worn or very personal colour can put some buyers off, so many owners remove it before selling.
Should I remove clear PPF before selling?
Usually not, if it is in good condition. Clear PPF does not change how the car looks, and it has kept the paint under it protected.
Can I remove a car wrap myself?
It is safer to have a wrap studio do it. Film on resprayed panels can pull paint off, and leftover adhesive needs careful cleaning.
