Car window tint rules in Singapore: the 70% and 25% light limits

The rule in one line

In Singapore, film on the front windscreen and front side windows must let at least 70% of visible light through, and film on the rear windscreen and rear side windows must let at least 25% through. The Ministry of Transport restated this in Parliament on 7 April 2026.

What the numbers mean

The percentage is visible light transmission: how much light still gets through the glass and film together. A higher number is lighter. So "70%" at the front means a light film, chosen mainly to reject heat, while "25%" at the rear allows a much darker shade for privacy.

Do you need LTA approval?

No. LTA's OneMotoring page on vehicle modifications lists tinted films and tinted glass as modifications that do not need LTA approval. The same page lists tinting or masking of vehicle lamps as not allowed, so headlights and tail lights must not be tinted.

Heat rejection matters more than darkness

Dark film is not the same as cool film. What keeps a cabin cool is infrared (IR) rejection. The nano ceramic solar film we posted for our opening offer rejects 93% to 96% of IR, so a light, legal front film can still cut a lot of heat.

Our checklist before you tint

  • Ask for the visible light figure of each film on each window, front and rear.
  • Ask for the IR rejection figure, not just the shade.
  • Check what the warranty covers: fading, bubbling and peeling.
  • If you have old film, ask whether removal is included.

Questions

Is 50% tint legal on front windows in Singapore?

No. Front windscreen and front side windows need at least 70% visible light transmission, so a 50% film is too dark for the front.

Can I tint my headlights?

No. OneMotoring lists tinting or masking of vehicle lamps as a modification that is not allowed. Clear protection film on headlamps is a different thing and keeps them clear.
