The short answer

Choose a wrap if you want a new colour or finish on paint that is in good condition and you may want to go back to the original later. Choose a respray if the paint is damaged, peeling or rusting, or you want a permanent change. A wrap covers the paint; it does not repair it. A respray replaces it.

How is a wrap different from a respray?

A wrap is a film applied over the existing paint, so the original colour is covered, not removed. A respray removes or sands the old finish, repairs the surface and applies new paint, which is then cured. One is a layer you can take off; the other is a new paint job.

Which one can you undo?

Only the wrap. A studio can peel the film off later and the original paint is underneath, as long as it was sound to begin with. A respray cannot be reversed, so a colour you tire of means another respray.

What about damaged or old paint?

This is where a respray wins. Film needs sound paint to stick to. Peeling lacquer, rust, deep scratches and dents will show through a wrap or can lift with the film when it comes off. If the paint is already failing, repair or respray it first. Ask the studio to inspect the paint before you decide.

How do the finishes and colours compare?

Wraps come in gloss, satin and matte, plus colours that are hard to get from paint, and changing back is simple. Paint can also be gloss or matte, but a matte or satin paint finish is harder to repair. See satin, matte or gloss to compare, or the colours we have done in our colour catalogue.

What does it mean for resale and insurance?

Many buyers like original paint, and a wrap that can be removed keeps that option open. Our guide on whether to remove a wrap before selling goes through it. Tell your insurer about a colour change, whichever way you do it, and ask them what they need.

How should you decide?

Look at three things: the condition of your paint, how permanent you want the change to be, and what you want it to look like. Get quotes for both on your own car, because the work depends on the car and the finish. If the paint is sound and you want a new look, our colour change wrap service is the place to start.

Questions

Is a car wrap better than a respray?

Neither is better for every car. A wrap suits a colour or finish change you may want to undo, on paint that is in good condition. A respray suits paint that is already damaged, peeling or rusty, or a change you want to be permanent.

Can a wrap cover damaged paint?

Not reliably. A wrap sits on top of the paint, so scratches, dents, rust or flaking lacquer can show through or lift the film. Repair the paint first, or choose a respray.

Can a wrap be removed and the original paint restored?

Usually, yes, on sound paint. A wrap studio peels the film off and the original paint is still underneath. A respray replaces the paint, so it cannot be undone that way.
